- depending on the region of cultivation, it is early ripening, mid-ripening and mid-late.
Pros and cons
Vegetable growers distinguish the following from the variety virtues:
- unique taste;
- excellent keeping quality - can be stored almost until the next harvest;
- convenient bulb shape;
- high level of productivity;
- universality of application;
- it is well cleared of a husk;
- sufficiently resistant to disease and pest attacks;
- Suitable for planting in different climatic zones.
But there is a bit disadvantages:
- during storage, the husk crumbles;
- planting material is quite expensive;
- large bulbs can give an arrow;
- Harvested bad tolerates damp.
Breeding methods
There are several ways to propagate this onion:
- Sevkom. Seeds can be grown independently or bought in a specialized store.
- Vegetative way. In this case, teeth are used that are formed on adult bulbs - they are carefully cut, germinated and planted in the soil.
Landing
Before planting Bamberger, familiarize yourself with the rules of planting - how to prepare the site and directly planting material.
Terms
It is best to plant Bamberger onions on sandy loamy soils, and choose a well-lit place without drafts. This variety is planted in the winter or early spring. If planting is carried out in the winter, then pick the smallest bulbs.
Also, when growing this variety, follow the rules of crop rotation - in the place where the onion grew, it can not be planted for 3 years. It is better to select the places where legumes, tomatoes or cabbage grew in past seasons. A great neighbor for Bamberger is carrots.
Soil preparation
Before planting onions, the soil is prepared - dig up the soil and lay fertilizers, since the soil must have a loose structure with a sufficient amount of nutrients. To do this, follow these steps:
- weeding (to a depth of 2-3 cm);
- remove all weeds;
- if your site grows more than 5 pieces of perennial weeds per 1 square. m, conduct a chemical fight against them - use the herbicides Roundup and Hurricane (30 ml per one hundredth);
- spread organic fertilizers on the soil surface - rotted manure or compost (from 5 to 9 kg per 1 sq. m);
- a few days after fertilizing, plow the site - the optimal depth is 15-18 cm;
- Align the plowed area with agricultural equipment - if once was not enough, then repeat the harrowing;
- divide the prepared soil into holes (the amount depends on the scale of planting).
Seed preparation
Since there are 2 methods for growing Bamberger, there are also several preparatory features for the preparation of seed.
Preparation of sets
Dry the material by spreading the bulbs in a warm room. Even if you have grown sevoc on your own, warm it up anyway before planting.
Planting material is heated gradually:
- keep it for several weeks in a room with an air temperature of about +20 degrees;
- a day before planting in the soil, transfer the plant to a room in which the temperature will be 15-20 degrees higher.
This speeds up the germination of the onion, and also prevents the appearance of arrows. If you do not have time for such a long process, you can speed it up by lowering the bulbs before planting in the ground for 15-20 minutes in hot water. Also, to stimulate growth, use stimulant drugs - Rost-1 or Gumisol (instructions for use are on the package).
To prevent diseases and pests, treat the sevoc with a solution of potassium permanganate or copper sulfate, and before planting, check them again to make sure that they are free from various defects - traces of decay, mold and other things.
The set must be dense, golden in color and rustle in the hands. It is good if all planting material is approximately the same size. The most suitable size is 2-4 cm. If the size is smaller, the bow will not give the desired result, if it is larger, it can shoot.
Planting sevka in the winter is carried out 20 days before the onset of frost. Grooves of 3-4 cm depth are made on the site, and the distance between them is 20-30 cm. Planting is set with an interval of 8-10 cm, after which they are covered with soil and mulched.
Preparing and planting seeds
If the cultivation is carried out not by bulbs, but by seeds, then they are also prepared for planting:
- Sort through seeds, separating empty, damaged, or rotten.
- Before sowing, immerse the seeds in a solution with growth stimulants - take Vympel or Emistim preparations for this. To prepare the solution, it is enough to add 5 ml of growth stimulants to 5 liters of water.
- Immerse the seeds in this liquid for 24 hours, and then immediately plant them in pre-prepared wells.
When sowing seeds, furrows are made to a depth of 5-7 cm and watered abundantly with water. The distance between them is 15 cm. Before sowing, put rotten manure (50 g) and superphosphate (10 g) at the bottom of the furrows, after which the seeds are sown to a depth of 2-3 cm (3 g per 1 sq. M). Then fill the finished rows with soil and lightly tamp the ground.
Landing time
In different regions, sevka planting dates differ:
- In Siberia, sowing is planted in open ground at the end of May. Keep track of the temperature before planting - it should be at least 8-10 degrees.
- In the Urals, sowing is planted around mid-May. As in Siberia, wait until the soil temperature is + 8-10 degrees.
- The optimal time for planting sowing for central Russia is mid-April - early May.
Care Rules
To plant onions is not all. Further, some agricultural activities are carried out so that the crop is exactly obtained.
Watering
Watering is carried out throughout the period of active growth of onions, until the turnip is finally ripe. The frequency of watering depends on several factors, but the main ones are weather conditions.
Moderation and regularity of irrigation is important - Bamberger needs plentiful onions 2 weeks after planting. Irrigation is carried out with the settled water (5 l per 1 sq.). After this, humidification is carried out as the top layer of the soil dries.
At first - 2 times a week, then, from mid-summer, the frequency of irrigation is reduced to avoid waterlogging of the soil. It is very important to completely stop watering 2 weeks before harvesting.
Loosening
This procedure is carried out so that the plant receives a sufficient amount of oxygen. Loosening is carried out at least once a week.
If you add mulch under the onion, then you can do without loosening. Peat, sawdust, and rotted straw are suitable as mulch.
Weeding
Weed as soon as you notice weed emergence. The main thing in this procedure is the complete removal of weeds before their rooting. The depth of weeding is 2-3 cm.
Top dressing
With the advent of the first seedlings, the time comes for fertilizing the plant. For the season, they feed onions three times according to the following scheme:
- on the 15th day, add a solution of chicken manure at the rate of 10 l per 1 sq. m of land;
- after 21 days, apply nitrogen fertilizers at the rate of 2 tbsp. l urea per 10 liters of water;
- after another 21 days, the soil is watered with potash top dressing (2 tbsp. superphosphate per 10 liters of water).
Pest and Disease Control
Onions are quite resistant to disease. To prevent and strengthen young individuals, double-treat with copper sulphate and copper chloroxide. The first time - when the feathers reach a length of 20 cm, and the second - in the middle of summer during the period of active growth.
Bamberger is attacked by the following diseases:
Disease | Symptoms | Fighting / Prevention |
Powdery mildew | It affects bulbs, seed arrows and leaves. It appears in the form of elongated spots, on which a grayish-purple fluff forms. | Harvesting plant residues from previous years of cultivation, correct crop rotation, balanced top dressing, treatment with fungicides (Topsin 500 SK). |
Bacteriosis. | Stems develop poorly, moist rot appears at the base. | Do not water by sprinkling, use fungicides (Copernico Hi Bio). |
Yellow dwarfism | Viral disease, manifested in the form of yellow stripes on the leaves. The affected leaves lie on the ground, and the bulb remains small and does not withstand winter storage. | There is no treatment, prevention - the elimination of affected plants, the planting of healthy planting material, insecticides. |
Fusarium | A fungal disease affecting roots, bulbs and leaves damaged during field work or pests. Sick roots are covered with white spots, the leaves have a slight yellowing. | Use of healthy material, chemical treatment with drugs (Topsin 500 SK) - 5 or 10 g per 10 liters of water. A solution (0.5 L) is sprayed on each plant. |
The following types of insects or pests can also attack the Bamberger onion variety:
Pest | Symptoms | Fighting / Prevention |
Nematode | Attacks stems and bulbs, appears in the spring. The nematode is infected with onions through the soil or infected seeds. The bulbs remain small, have cracks and an irregular shape. | Correct crop rotation, removal of diseased plants from the site, processing with the help of Forse preparations of 1.5 G (15 kg per 1 ha). |
Onion fly | Lays eggs in onions, the larvae of which gnaw through holes in the leaves and advance to the center of the leaf. Onions dry out, growth rate decreases. | An early planting of onions, as well as spraying with insecticides Diazon (3 g per 1 sq. M) and Borey (10 ml per 10 l of water) are used as a pest control. |
Secretive Proboscis. | Insects sitting in between onion leaves feed onion juice, causing serious damage to plants. | Fight them using the drug Mospilan 20 SG (1.5 g per 6 liters of water). |
How to collect and store crops?
After harvesting, your task is to preserve it. When digging out the onions, do not cut the feather, as it can later be used to tie vegetables into bundles or weave braids.
Once harvesting is complete, the onion heads are sent to dry in a warm, well-ventilated area. Recommended drying temperature is +30 degrees. If the street is in good sunny weather, then they are dried right on the street, laying their heads on a prepared pallet.
Before sending the onions to the storage place, each onion is inspected, since if there are at least several units with rot, this will ruin the entire crop.
It is recommended to store vegetables in the basement, the temperature there should be + 3-10 degrees, and the humidity level - 70%. If there is no basement, then a warm and glazed balcony is suitable.
Store onions well in:
- wooden or plastic boxes with holes made;
- wicker baskets;
- cardboard boxes in which perforation is done;
- in mesh bags.
Popular issues
Almost all the problems that you may encounter when growing Bamberger are related to violations of the following agrotechnical rules:
- planting too small sets makes the root system undeveloped and does not support the weight of the green mass;
- the soil lacks nutrients;
- growing temperature is too high;
- little light.
Reviews
Kristina, 35 years old, Chelyabinsk. I tried to plant the Bamberger variety several times in the winter and determined for myself that it was winter onions that ultimately had the best taste. In general, Bamberger is attractive because it is very unpretentious, every year gives a good harvest and is easy to care for. When I planted him for the first time, I was still a complete beginner in this matter, and still managed.
Valentine, 42 years old, Yekaterinburg. I first tried to grow Bamberger last year and was very pleased. He noted to himself that, despite its unpretentiousness, it is better not to skimp on fertilizers, and then the crop will not keep itself waiting.
